‘(The Work Is A Dance And The Dance Is) TANGO!’ is a series of printed collages, built from the shreds of artistic and photographic experiments. As referenced in its title, the work is an acknowledgment and acceptance of the contradictions, conflicts, and intensive emotional influx that comes with undergoing a process of unlearning perfectionism; and practice making for the purpose of self-approval and play.
Much like a dance, there’s a desire to communicate a back and forth, a silent conversation between viewer and artwork; through the tension embedded in the vivid colours and shapes that strain within the confines of the shreds against the blackness.
This series - in partnership with the ‘zine, ‘An Artists’ Manifesto’, which acts as a manifesto for making and a reminder of purpose - aims to share the process, the ideas, the feeling, and the experience of undoing and redoing, while intentionally fragmenting or distorting any detail; abstracting its meaning beyond what is visible on the surface. This is to allow impressions to be made, separate from my own, so to encourage a personal resonance, and potentially an internal review, to take place.
